Hip-Hop.com video: DJ Qbert duels with DJ Shortkut
Posted in SHOW RECAP on November 22nd, 2011 by Kevin – Be the first to commentHere’s a little treat for ya: We got our camera on stage during the Justin Bua’s The Legends of Hip Hop book tour kickoff party and was at the right place and the right time when DJ Shortkut snuck back on stage to join QBert for a little back and forth scratching. The performance itself, of course, was priceless, but so was the reaction of the crowd.
Show Recap: Justin Bua and Qbert kick off book tour
Posted in SHOW RECAP on November 13th, 2011 by Kevin – Be the first to commentJustin Bua kicked off his promotional tour for his new book, The Legends of Hip Hop, Thursday night at the Independent in San Francisco, with the help of his good friends and former members of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, DJs Qbert, Shortkut and Apollo. A historical night, this was the first time in over a decade that all three would appear at a show together.
Well, what can you say about the Invisibl Skratch Piklz? They seemed to had nonsensically broke up at their peak, and after a decade being solo artists, we start to see why maybe a little separation is good. Each DJ that showed up today, Apollo, Shortkut, and Qbert (Mix Master Mike, who was originally on the bill, had to withdraw due to family issues) each brought their own take at the art. read more »
Justin Bua on Qbert and Mix Master Mike, and what else he has in store
Posted in ART, FASHION & LIFESTYLE on October 23rd, 2011 by Kevin – Be the first to commentWith the second part of our interview with hip-hop fine artist Justin Bua, we’re going to touch upon the big attraction itself, the reunion show he’s throwing with Qbert and Mix Master Mike. Sure this is momentous, but why DJs, and why these two? If you missed out earlier, here’s the first part.
You’ve invited DJs Qbert and Mix Master Mike to be a part of your tour. In SF, they’re playing on the same stage together as well–the first time in 10 years. Why bring DJs—and those two in particular—to celebrate the book’s release?
Well first and foremost I consider them to be two of the greatest DJs that have ever graced this planet and the The Invisibl Skratch Piklz were one of the greatest groups that revolutionized this culture. Secondly, Qbert and Mike are like the Beatles. Sure Paul is great and John Lennon wrote Strawberry Fields on his own but together they are legendary. This is the first time Q and Mike are playing on the same stage in over 12 years! That’s like sexual chocolate or ill begotten street magic. It’s going to be insanity to the 5000th power.
What will be your part of the show? Are you planning on doing any live art? read more »

Posted in UPCOMING EVENTS on September 23rd, 2011 by Kevin – Be the first to commentIt has been over ten years since Mix Master Mike and Qbert last shared the stage together, but from what we understand, there will be a day when we should see these two masters of turntablism perform together once again. Actually, just kidding, we won’t have to wait long—the Invisibl Skratch Picklz frontmen, once called Dream Team USA when they paired together for the DMC World Championships, will headline a special book release party November 10, 2011 at the Independent in San Francisco celebrating the release of Justin Bua’s new book, The Legends of Hip Hop, Bua’s ode to the fifty most memorable figures in hip-hop history. Celebrated fine arts painter Bua, whose work you most likely have seen before, will also provide accompanying visuals for the show. Tickets are now available to the general public at TicketFly.
