The Brooklyn Nets have arrived, logo and style by Jay-Z

Posted in ART, FASHION & LIFESTYLE on April 30th, 2012 by Kevin – Be the first to comment

“Hello Brooklyn…” If you got the Beasie Boys in your head, or even Lil Wayne and 808′s, that may not be an accident. The playoff-less New Jersey Nets, with Jay-Z as a minority shareholder, has now been officially rechristened the Brooklyn Nets, and as all such things go, the first thing to change is the logo. And from the looks of it, it was Jay-Z behind the rebranding as he is credited as the designer of the logos the Nets will use next year along with the new black and white color scheme. And their new tagline, from a Beastie Boys track on Paul’s Boutique and reminiscent of a track off of Jay-Z’s American Gangster album a few years ago, is going mesh quite well with the vintage hip-hop theme the Nets are going for in their merchandising, with plenty of cues towards Beastie Boys, Biggie Smalls, and of course, Jay-Z songs (or even Biggie AND Jay-Z songs, even).

And to say it, Jay-Z didn’t do a bad job at all. It’s the NBA logo equivalent of a slim suit with a skinny black tie, and in a sea of logo misfires that is the modern-day NBA (gaddam that Golden State Warriors logo still looks clunky as hell) it’s nice someone finally can put something vintage looking on their shorts that actually looks classy as well. Speaking of vintage, here’s another sign that hip-hop has aged to the point where we can be talking about vintage hip-hop.

Jay-Z’s entire SXSW set posted online on YouTube

Posted in MUSIC on March 14th, 2012 by Kevin – Be the first to comment

American Express, who sponsored the live stream of Jay-Z’s show at this year’s SXSW in Austin, posted the entire recording of the show on YouTube today. Nevermind the stream was all to advertise a credit card incentive program, the show itself was uninterrupted and was just Jay-Z on an X-shaped stage with all the prerequisite lights necessary of a performer of his stature. The hour-long set had songs from both pre-retirement and post-retirement periods, but with a heavy emphasis on The Black Album material. Nothing from Reasonable Doubt but judging by the crowd, it didn’t look like it they would have recognized that stuff anyway. But I digress…

UPDATE: Actually, I take that back, this was only the first hour of his show, despite the labeling on the YouTube page. The stream itself did not end with “Encore”, but lasted about an hour after so.

“Glory”, ode to newborn daughter, is the rawest Jay-Z track in years

Posted in MUSIC on January 9th, 2012 by Kevin – 1 Comment

Raw as in emotion, that is. Jay-Z and Beyonce just celebrated the birth of their daughter Blue Ivy Carter, and I was about to leave that kind of news, as great as it is, to the industry out there that devotes itself to these kinds of things. But this is a music blog, and this track, posted on Jay’s blog Life+Times, is something else entirely.

Remember on “Run This Town” when it sounded like Kanye killed Jay on his own track? And then we’d see that pattern repeat itself (in a lesser degree) on “New Day” off of Watch the Throne? Kanye is an emotional dude, and he lets that faucet of his go on full blast nearly every time he rhymes, especially since “808′s and Heartbreak”. And Jay-Z…well, he keeps his cool. Too cool sometimes, to the point of underwhelming.

Well, Jay-Z finally lost his cool. As corny as it is to make a song about your child, Jay does it, and does it without care to the persona he projects. He takes his crazy person muttering (“glory, glory, glory, sorry”) and makes it the hook. He sprinkles a bit of insider info (the miscarriage) that got the gossip blogs in a tizzy. And the outcome is terrific.

Jay-Z to play in Carnegie Hall in February

Posted in UPCOMING EVENTS on December 8th, 2011 by Kevin – Be the first to comment

There’s an old joke about Carnegie Hall where someone asks another person on the street how to get to Carnegie Hall, and the answer was “Practice!” The old music hall, probably the most prestigious in New York and one of the most in the world, isn’t a place for nobodies or even up-and-comers, and you need a certain status to grace its stage. Jay-Z apparently passes that test with flying colors. The hall, built by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, will host two benefit dates on February 6 and 7, with proceeds going to his and his mother’s scholarship foundation and the United Way. It’s not the first time Carnegie has seen hip-hop (the honor belongs, fittingly, to Afrika Bambaata), but it’s still a rare occasion for the hall, usually populated by classical and jazz musicians.

Behind the scenes mini documentary with Jay-Z, Kanye and “Watch The Throne”

Posted in MUSIC on July 24th, 2011 by Kevin – Be the first to comment

As if intentionally leaking “Otis” wasn’t enough, Jay and Yeezy [update: now henceforth known as "The Throne"] got their cinéma vérité on and were filmed in the studio and their surroundings in a private estate in Australia while recording their new album collaboration. In the promo, Jay shares his thoughts on Kanye’s progression, Kanye shares some gifts with Jay, some new verses are revealed, Russell Crowe lights up when his name is dropped in Kanye’s lines, and everyone wonders what it would had been to be in the studio while Michael Jackson made “Thriller”. This label-produced short (Def Jam and Jay-Z together again, I just realized) is interesting and although not really all that substantial, it does whet the whistle a bit more.

Jay-Z Visits High School Students In Australia

Posted in BRAIN FOOD on December 17th, 2010 by The Dash – Be the first to comment

CAPS worn backwards, untucked shirts and corridor fist bumps made a Sydney school seem an unlikely place for Oprah mania, but for the students who idolise his songs, Jay-Z was her way to their hearts.

The US rap legend visited Canterbury Boys High School before being whisked off to the filming of the Oprah Winfrey show at the Opera House yesterday.

”The message he [told the boys was] you can be whatever you choose to be, you just have to work hard, believe in yourself and you can go anywhere,” said the principal, Leslee Mitton.

He was there thanks to a substitute teacher and self-confessed Oprah ”tragic”, Polly Dunning, who had answered a question on the talk show queen’s website about why the hip-hop superstar should visit.

Dunning, 22, wrote about her students’ lower socio-economic status and how 90 per cent are from non-English-speaking backgrounds. She detailed their love of hip-hop, and how Jay-Z is a good role model – from his business prowess to his relationship with his wife, Beyonce.

But Dunning did not think about it again until almost two weeks ago when she ”got the strangest phone call of my life”.

Production staff mostly kept details vague. Dunning was under the impression the show’s focus would be on education in Australia. It was expected Oprah’s team would announce to the students they were going to the show on Monday morning, but the biggest surprise occurred as Dunning read out her submission to the students.

”As she came to the end of it, about saying why she wanted Jay-Z to come to the school, he appeared … The kids, the looks on their faces, they just went hysterical,” Mitton said.

Dunning doesn’t remember the moment he walked through the door – though there were definitely hugs involved – but Mitton does. ”She started hyperventilating, then she started to cry,” she said.

Students put on an African drumming performance and year 11 music students sang Billionaire, which they had performed a week earlier for year 10′s graduation.

Coincidentally, the song lyrics say: ”I wanna be on the cover of Forbes magazine/ Smiling next to Oprah and the Queen.”

At the filming yesterday, the 480 students and their teachers were promised their own laptops, as well as computers for the library and specialist computers for the music room.

”I don’t think they can believe it; I can’t believe it,” Dunning said. ”The one thing I found really overwhelming is they’re so grateful for everything … As teachers we always tell them how important they are and how much we love them but to get it from people of that calibre, to get it from Jay-Z and from Oprah, [to be told] how important you are is just amazing.”

A year 9 student, Tyler Franks-Morgan, 15, said he and his friends always talk about Jay-Z and were really shocked when he arrived. ”We were screaming, everyone was screaming. Everyone was crying as well,” he said.

”It’s been a fantastic day, I’m still thrilled about what happened … What [Dunning] said to Jay-Z was magnificent … Everyone loves you now, always have, always will.”

Jay-Z, Bing.com Partner to Promote Rapper’s Book, ‘Decoded’

Posted in ART, FASHION & LIFESTYLE, MUSIC, TECH & WEB NEWS on October 21st, 2010 by The Dash – Be the first to comment

Most of Jay-Z’s life has been lived in public, and the stories of his rise to fame and fortune have been told over and over again (both in the media and in his frequently autobiographical lyrics), but the legendary rapper (born Shawn Carter) has never seen a book about his life published. That all will change on November 16, when Jigga drops “Decoded,” a tome that combines stories about his growing up with his lyrics (many of which are being formally written down for the first time, as Jay always keeps his words inside his skull). In the lead-up to the book, Jay has partnered with Bing for a mind-bending Internet scavenger hunt that kicked off last night with a party at the Delano Hotel in Miami. Clues are slowly being released that lead to lyrics people can track down in the real world, and the lucky few who manage to crack the code will be eligible to receive a grand prize of an autographed copy of the book and a trip to Las Vegas to see Jay and Coldplay in concert on New Year’s Eve.
